The new school is off to a running start, literally. A new running club has been introduced to Concord Carlisle by juniors Elsa Water and Theresa Green, with Ms. Mitari as a supervisor. The goal of this new club is to create a low-pressure environment where people can run and enjoy time together. Waters explains, “Our running club is about forming a community of people who are passionate about running. We are forming a community based on interest and passion, not based on skill level. This means everybody is welcome, and given the opportunity to improve!”
After noticing how big of a commitment sports can be at CC, the leaders of the club wanted to give students who may not be able to play regular sports the opportunity to still be a part of an active community. Waters adds that their goal is to keep this club open to “anyone who wants to run. Whether that’s people who’ve done it before, are completely new to it, or somewhere in between.” They created this club for those who are interested in running with others and want an opportunity to do so in a less competitive environment.
Waters also shared that she’s been a competitive swimmer for most of her life, but had to press pause last spring for health reasons. In the meantime, she took up running, and ended up loving it! Although she’s able to return to swimming now, she wanted an opportunity to continue running on the side, which takes form in this club.
Running club meets in the library every Monday from 2:45 to 4:00. After they gather, they change, have a snack, and then head outside to stretch and strength train. Then, they go on a run, which usually is for a couple miles.
“In the short term,” Green says, “it would be great to simply grow our membership.” And in terms of long term goals, Elsa says; “I would love for this club to grow and take a more active part in the community. Whether that be through running local races, volunteering at events, or even later down the road, founding our own 5k run/walk.”
If you’re interested in running, make sure to head down to the library next Monday after school and check out Running Club!
