It’s that time of the year again. Winter break is over, and midterms are coming up fast. For many of us, because of the pandemic, this is the first year that midterms actually count grade-wise. This may be causing some anxiety. But don’t worry: I have some tips for you. Inspired by my finals article last year, here are some tips to help you survive and thrive during your midterms!
Make a game plan! Outline what your study schedule is going to look like. Make sure to prioritize based on what exams are closest and farthest away. This will ensure that you stay organized and in a fit state to begin studying.
Study actively! Rather than just reading over your notes, try to make flashcards, do practice questions, or create a study guide. This will help you actually remember the information you are reviewing. Also, mix up your study methods so you don’t get bored.
Find a new study spot! If you start getting distracted or notice you are losing focus, it may be a good idea to change your location. Try studying at the library or even a quiet place outdoors.
Work with a study buddy! It can be really helpful to have a friend review ideas with you and quiz you. Just make sure you are staying on task!
Take breaks! If you study for too long without resting, it will be harder to focus on the material and it will exhaust you. You can try going on a quick walk, having a snack, or listening to some music.
Get enough sleep! Without sleep, you won’t be able to remember the information you learned and you will be exhausted and stressed on the day of your exam.
Eat well! To be successful in your exams, you need to be full of energy. Make sure you eat a lot of protein-filled foods and drink plenty of water.
Finally, and most importantly, before you begin, take a deep breath and relax. You are going to do great! And congrats, you’ve completed semester one!
