In the midst of Concord’s 375th anniversary, a new club at Concord-Carlisle High School has arisen, centered around an activity dating all the way back to the time of our ancestors: musketeering. The musket, a gun used in many infantries in Europe, was utilized commonly during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The minutemen used this weapon to fight off the iconic British Red Coats during the famous battle on Old North Bridge in Concord.
Pioneering this new club to popularity is none other than British student Lily Cano Maris ’11. To avoid controversy, Cano Maris ensures, “This club shows no discrimination to either British or American members; an American can be a Red Coat and vice versa. We’re all just here to have fun, of course!” To aid this endeavor is Social Studies teacher Michael Goodwin. “Mr. Goodwin adds a new dimension to the club, not only with his vibrant personality, but with his great knowledge of history,” states Cano Maris. Going back to the roots of Concord during the Revolutionary War, the musketeering club will have mock battles twice a month, each based upon the fights during the Revolutionary War. Many of the costumes for the battles will be provided by our very own drama department, frills and all. “The battles would be nothing without the traditional 18th century clothing. Not only are they durable for hiding behind trees and jumping through bushes, but they look great as well. Nothing like 1700s classy wear!” exclaims Cano Maris.
During the month of September, club members will first learn the intricate commands used while shooting a musket and how to use the weapon. In order to ensure the safety of the students, the muskets will not shoot bullets. Students will, however, still learn how to pack gunpowder in a synchronized way to keep the historical art of musketeering alive. Cano Maris will lead commands for the Red Coats, while an election will be held fot the Minuteman Captain position. The mock battles will also serve as community service work as they perform for the elderly in the area. The first meeting will be held September 21st in H-1. We hope all can come!
