After helping organize the Thinker’s Agenda coat drive for the Concord Carlisle Foundation, I became curious about the organization’s role in our community and where our donations were making an impact. To learn more, I reached out to Sneha Harsh, a coordinator at the foundation, who shared valuable insights into their mission and work.
In today’s world, where social issues persistently challenge the fabric of communities, the Concord Carlisle Foundation stands out as a beacon of hope and support. Originally formed in 1947, previously known as the Concord Carlisle Community Chest, this nonprofit embodies the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors. “It aims to inspire and engage the residents of Concord and Carlisle to provide essential aid to those in need, rooted deeply in its mission to harness the generosity of local businesses and individuals,” says Mrs. Harsh.
The foundation is a vital link between community generosity and the assistance needed to address various challenges. In 2021, a comprehensive needs assessment revealed several critical areas requiring immediate attention. Among these, mental health services stood out as significantly inadequate, with a troubling rise in demand for direct support. Other urgent issues include food insecurity, housing affordability, transportation challenges, and enhanced support for the elderly.
One of the Concord Carlisle Foundation’s standout achievements is establishing the Community Closet. Launched in May 2024 in collaboration with TriCon Church, this initiative serves as a free resource for eligible residents, providing items essential for daily living. The Closet offers coats, sweaters, jeans, gloves, infant clothing, and new socks and underwear, all sourced through generous monthly donation drives and community drop-off events. This effort not only meets immediate clothing needs but also fosters a sense of belonging and support among residents.
Recipients of the aid often share touching stories highlighting the aid’s significance. Mrs. Harsh included a story about one particularly memorable moment involving a single mother who reached out to express her gratitude after receiving winter clothing for her children. With one pressing need met, she could redirect her focus toward other challenges, demonstrating the ripple effect of community support and the necessity of this organization amidst an affluent community.
How Can You Get Involved?
Mrs. Harsh described a few ways anyone can start to support the foundation and help others in the community, which are included below.
